Overview
The Manaslu Circuit Trek – 13 Days is one of Nepal’s most rewarding Himalayan adventures, combining spectacular mountain scenery, remote mountain villages, Tibetan-influenced culture and the challenging crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5,106m.
The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola and follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley through traditional settlements including Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Syala, Samagaun and Samdo. As the trail climbs higher, the landscape changes from subtropical forests and terraced hillsides to alpine meadows, glaciers and dramatic Himalayan scenery.
A major highlight is the acclimatization day in Samagaun, with an optional hike toward Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake. The journey then continues toward Samdo and Dharmasala before the demanding crossing of Larkya La Pass.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends toward Bhimthang and Tilche before the return drive to Kathmandu.
The Manaslu Circuit is ideal for travelers looking for a quieter alternative to Nepal’s more crowded trekking routes while still experiencing spectacular high-altitude Himalayan landscapes.

Itinerary
Your Manaslu adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. The journey takes approximately 7–8 hours, passing through hills, terraced farmland, rivers and rural villages.
As the road enters the Budhi Gandaki Valley, the landscape becomes more rugged and remote. Upon arrival in Machha Khola, check into a local teahouse and rest for the night.
After breakfast, begin trekking along the Budhi Gandaki River. The trail passes through forests, small settlements, suspension bridges and riverside sections before reaching Jagat.
Jagat is a traditional mountain village and the gateway to the restricted Manaslu region.
The trail continues through the Budhi Gandaki Valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing through forests and traditional villages.
The landscape gradually becomes more mountainous as you move deeper into the Manaslu region. Continue toward Deng, a small settlement surrounded by dramatic hills and forests.
Today the trail climbs gradually toward Namrung. You will notice a change in vegetation and architecture as the elevation increases.
The route passes through forests, traditional villages and impressive mountain landscapes. Namrung is an important settlement on the upper Manaslu trail and offers beautiful views of the surrounding peaks.
Continue toward the higher Manaslu Valley. The trail passes through alpine landscapes and villages influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture.
As you approach Syala, views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks become increasingly impressive. The changing landscape marks your transition into the high-altitude section of the trek.
Today is one of the most scenic days of the trek. The trail continues toward Samagaun, with an excursion toward Pungyen Gompa depending on trail and weather conditions.
The surrounding mountains become increasingly dramatic, with Manaslu dominating the skyline.
Continue to Samagaun, one of the most important villages in the upper Manaslu region.
Today is dedicated to acclimatization.
Depending on weather, fitness and trail conditions, you can hike toward Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake. The hike provides spectacular views of Manaslu and the surrounding glaciers and mountains.
The purpose of the acclimatization day is to allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing higher.
Return to Samagaun for an overnight stay.
After breakfast, continue toward Samdo. The trail follows the upper Budhi Gandaki Valley through increasingly barren alpine landscapes.
Samdo is a traditional high-altitude settlement located close to the Nepal–Tibet border.
Enjoy the mountain scenery and prepare for the higher sections of the trek.
Today offers an opportunity to explore the high-altitude landscape around Samdo.
Depending on weather, fitness and local trail conditions, you can hike toward the Nepal–Tibet border area before returning to Samdo for the night.
This excursion also provides additional acclimatization before the Larkya La Pass crossing.
Today you move toward Dharmasala, also known as Larkya Phedi, the final overnight stop before crossing Larkya La Pass.
The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and alpine. Take the afternoon to rest, hydrate and prepare for the demanding pass-crossing day.
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek.
Start early and ascend toward Larkya La Pass at 5,106m. The trail can be snowy and icy depending on the season, and the crossing requires good stamina and careful walking.
From the top of the pass, enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and high mountain landscapes.
After celebrating the successful crossing, descend toward Bhimthang.
After the challenging pass crossing, descend through beautiful mountain landscapes toward Tilche.
The trail gradually moves into lower elevations, with forests, rivers and traditional settlements replacing the high alpine environment.
Enjoy a more relaxed evening in Tilche.
After breakfast, begin the journey back to Kathmandu.
The drive takes you through the mountain roads toward the city. Depending on road and traffic conditions, the journey may take most of the day.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, your 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek officially comes to an end.

About Trips
Best Time for Manaslu Circuit Trek
The best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).
Spring – March to May
Spring offers pleasant trekking conditions, clear mountain views and blooming rhododendrons in the lower sections of the trail.
Autumn – September to November
Autumn is generally considered the best season for the Manaslu Circuit. After the monsoon, the skies are often clear and the mountain views are excellent.
Winter – December to February
Winter is possible for experienced trekkers, but temperatures can be very cold at high elevations and snow may affect Larkya La Pass.
Monsoon – June to August
The monsoon brings heavy rainfall to lower sections of the route. Landslides, muddy trails and road disruptions can affect transportation and trekking conditions, so this period is generally less suitable.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is moderate to challenging.
No technical climbing skills are required, but the trek involves long walking days, significant elevation gain and a high-altitude pass crossing.
The most demanding section is the crossing of Larkya La Pass at 5,106m.
Trekkers should be prepared for:
- 5–7 hours of walking on many trekking days
- Steep ascents and descents
- Uneven and rocky trails
- High-altitude conditions
- Cold temperatures
- Possible snow around Larkya La
- Long trekking days
- Basic accommodation at higher elevations
Good physical fitness and previous hiking or trekking experience are recommended.
Acclimatization and Altitude
Altitude is an important consideration on the Manaslu Circuit.
The itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Samagaun, with a hike toward Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake.
Trekkers should maintain a steady pace, drink enough water and communicate immediately with the guide if they experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue or shortness of breath.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended and should specifically cover:
- High-altitude trekking
- Emergency medical treatment
- Helicopter evacuation
- Personal accidents
- Trip interruption or cancellation
- Lost or delayed baggage
The Manaslu region is remote, so appropriate insurance is particularly important.
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided mainly in local teahouses and lodges.
Rooms are generally simple and comfortable, with shared bathroom facilities in many locations. At higher elevations, facilities become more basic and temperatures can be very cold at night.
Two nights in Kathmandu are included in a 3-star hotel on a sharing basis with breakfast.
Food and Drinking Water
During the trek, meals generally include local and international options such as:
- Dal bhat
- Rice and curry
- Noodles
- Pasta
- Potatoes
- Soups
- Tibetan-style bread
- Eggs
- Pancakes
- Seasonal vegetables
Dal bhat is one of the most popular choices because it provides a filling source of carbohydrates and protein.
Safe drinking water can be obtained from teahouses and local sources using appropriate purification methods. Carry reusable water bottles and purification tablets or a filter.
Guide and Porter Support
A professional trekking guide helps with navigation, permits, accommodation, cultural information and altitude monitoring.
Porters carry the main trekking baggage, allowing trekkers to walk with a lighter daypack. The standard arrangement is one porter for two trekkers.
Hiring local trekking staff also provides direct economic benefits to communities along the Manaslu trail.
Permits Required
The Manaslu Circuit is a restricted trekking area and requires appropriate permits.
Depending on the itinerary and current regulations, permits can include:
- Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the relevant section
- TIMS or other applicable trekking documentation
Permit rules and fees can change, so current requirements should be confirmed before departure.
Transportation
The trek begins with a road journey from Kathmandu toward Machha Khola.
The standard package uses shared transportation. Private jeep transfers are also available as an optional upgrade.
Mountain road conditions can be rough, and journey times may vary depending on weather, traffic and road conditions.
